Sport - Football

During the first world war Watton Church Lads kept the flag flying and had some fine young players. During the 1930's Watton also had a Thursday team, but were unable to win the strong Norwich Thursday League in which they competed, usually finishing mid-way. During the 1960's and 70's Watton had a successful Sunday F.C. who won the Ouse Valley Sunday League and were twice losing finalists in the Norfolk Sunday Cup at Carrow Road, losing 5-1 to Earlham United in 1964 and 3-0 to Loke United in 1967. However in 1977 they won the treble, winning the Thetford Sunday League, the League knock-out cup and the Norfolk Sunday Junior Cup. The last season was also a good one for Watton United when they finished level on points with Wroxham who won the Anglian Combination Premier Division by only a two goal margin.

Congratulations to Watton Schoolboys under 13 football team on winning 8 trophies this season. Providing these lads can get employment locally when they leave school, the future for Watton United F.C. looks very bright.
